Fall is empty nest time for many of us, whether our children are off to college or even off the Kindergarden. For many, those years of managing, serving, guiding and nurturing our offspring have defined us completely. For some, empty nest syndrome is a sense of joy and accomplishment because we’ve launched our charges into the world. For others, it’s bittersweet as we watch them go toward a future that we know will hold struggles as well as joys. Still for others, there is a feeling of loss, as though our purpose has been misplaced. And then, of course, there is the very real possibility that we may feel all of the above.
It’s Day 2 of our self-declared Back to Me Month and today we’re asking everyone to give themselves the gift of time by taking a break from their daily responsibilities. Take 10 minutes to read a book, look through a magazine, let your mind wander and relax. If the daily grind has you stressed and taking 10 seems impossible, set a kitchen timer for 10 minutes and tell yourself to drop your worries until the timer rings. See if you can clear your mind and allow space to dream, to be entertained, to drink in the deliciousness that is reading.
Every September, we get an overwhelming urge to buy new shoes and fresh notebooks. That “Back to School” mentality is so ingrained in our brains, even 40 years later, that we get a little weepy over a pack of #2 pencils. Even more than the start of the “New Year, New You” season every January, September still feels like the beginning of our new year. So this September, we’ve decided to put that urge to good use, and because we’re Queens of our own lives, we declare September to be “Back to Me Month.”
The ultimate gift to ourselves is to believe that, no matter what our age, size or circumstances, we are beautiful, valuable and worthy of admiration. Think how it would feel to go out into the world reflecting that feeling inside and out?
There is no better time than now to start to appreciate that you are perfect just the way you are—a truly remarkable woman who is more than ready to be Queen of Your Own Life!
Here are the 10 steps we took in order to claim our power, beauty and rightful royal place as Queen. It’s time to start living the life you desire and deserve. If not now, when?
We recently had the privilege of speaking the American Library Association’s ALTAFF event called “The Laugh’s on Us.” Speaking with us that evening were six other writers, humorists and comedians, each with a book just out or about to come out. These authors had us in stitches and because we believe in the power of a hearty belly laugh, we wanted to let you know about their books. Each one will be available at your local bookstore or from online retailers OR from your local library. We give a virtual touch of the pearls and a wave to the librarians out there who are making a difference, everyday, in the lives of millions as they continue to make literature, periodicals, movies, research materials and internet access available, free of charge, to all. Bravo!
So without further ado, here are the books and authors we met at ALA.

On May 9th, women around the world will wake up to a wide variety of Mother’s Day gifts. Many will get adorable cards made with crayons and construction paper. Some will wake up to breakfast in bed made with more love than culinary skill and still others will receive flowers from loved ones far away. Some will get gifts with fabulous vintage images like this one we used above compliments of our friends at The Vintage Workshop. As always, Mom’s and Grandmothers everywhere will be pleased to be remembered and will appreciate these loving gestures and delightful gifts.
Yet, some of the sweetest and most treasured gifts women can receive on Mothers Day are the gifts we give to ourselves. Not diamond bracelets or a pampered day at a spa, both perfectly lovely gifts and fun to receive.
