Clarity | The Battle for You

By Cindy Ratzlaff

I’m a busy woman, just like you.  I work full time from my home office and do quite a bit of traveling.  Because my clients are all over the world, I’m on the computer early in the morning to help people in Europe and into the early evening to take care of my west coast clients.  When I’m not traveling, I rarely leave my desk and when I do travel, my smart phone and apps save the day.  I’ve always prided myself on my dedication and work ethic.

Recently a health issue made me realize I’ve been putting myself on the bottom of my own to do list.

I struggled with finding the time to do what I needed to do so decided I had to create a plan for my health that rivaled the kind of planning I would naturally do for any of my clients.

I put together a project strategy for myself called “Healthier Me.” And, the main tools I’ve used to launch this project are my digital calendar and my women friends.

Here’s a peek at the “Healthier Me” launch and the new daily/weekly tasks I have now scheduled:

  • 15 minutes each morning for planning my daily work goals
  • 30 minutes each morning exercise (no exceptions)
  • 2 30 minute meal break and two 10 minute snack breaks every work day to keep my blood sugar level and my energy and focus optimal
  • 2 five minute stretching breaks to reduce repetitive motion stress
  • 2 Mini stress breaks each day to reduce eye strain from computer work.  I leave my desk and walk out into my yard to look at my flower or vegetable garden, stand on my patio and just breathe deeply even if only for 5 minutes.
  • Several times weekly, I check in with a good friend who only wants the best for me. Someone I can share anything with, truthfully, and know she’ll  listen without judgment.

For today, I need to think about myself as my own #1 client in order to bring some clarity and perspective to how I treat myself.  Hopefully by practicing kindness to myself, I’ll develop my self-care muscle.

How do you put yourself on the top of your own To Do list?

Until recently, I wasn’t even on the list forget being on the top of the to do list!! I have recently discovered Soul Collage and Art Journals. I now take at least 15 minutes a day for me for the purpose of making a new Soul Collage card and/or fixing a new journal entry. Now 15 minutes isn’t nearly long enough but it’s a beginning! I am loving it and discovering new parts of me in the process.

Discovering something that gives you joy is such a gift, Barbara. We love the idea of Art Journaling!
