What makes you laugh? Is it slapstick or puppies or silly jokes or the laughter of others? We all need a bag of tricks for those days when we just can’t see the humor in our struggles. We all need a bag of tricks to lift us up when we feel down. Humor can be slapstick or gentle chuckles elicited by baby animal photos. Whatever tickles your funny bone is worthy of a bookmark. Keeping a laughter list of websites, books, people and places that make us smile (or out and out laugh) is one way to combat the occasional down feeling and help lift you up. Surrounding ourselves with beauty is another. Immersing ourselves in nature, or in art can remind us that there is always something more, beyond this moment, and we will survive.  Please note that for some people, dark thoughts or sad feelings can be overwhelming and laughter or beauty do not penetrate the bubble. For these people, we urge you to seek the company of people who can help you find lightness. For some that will be professional assistance. For others, the company of trusted friends. We want to make sure you know we’re not making light of sadness, only recommending some strategies we’ve used during bouts of minor melancholy. How do you pull yourself out of the dumps? Let’s share. And, if you have a joke to share or a funny picture, all the better. Who’s ready to wear a clown nose?

When it is just a little case of down in the dumps, I like to read very young children’s books at the library. The short simple text and lovely detailed pictures pick me up. A quick smile.
