Queen of Your Own Life

Creating Joy | The Battle for You

by Kathy Kinney

Even though I live in Southern California and we have very few seasons, I have embarked on my spring cleaning.  I have something very rare in a Los Angeles home – a basement.  I have claimed a room down here for my very own – it’s my version of a man cave and I call it my craft room.   It used to be the old laundry room with a concrete floor and a big old cast iron double basin sink.  I’ve gathered some silly old lamps, paper, pencils and some scissors and this is where I play.  Other than a few silverfish and some spiders this space is all my own.  I changed a former place of drudgery in this old house to a center of fun and joy for me.

I’m a firm believer in the power of a can of paint to change your life.  By painting  even one wall in a room, you can completely change your surroundings and it costs a lot less than a trip to the Bahamas.  I love color and I found that a very inexpensive way to have it in my life is to buy those little mini sample jars of paint from the hardware store.  I use them on everything from walls and furniture to greeting cards and birdhouses.  They can be mixed and matched and using them makes me feel like Monet at Giverny – or was it Manet – I always get my French impressionist painters mixed up.  Doesn’t matter cause it’s just about me allowing myself to have fun.  My desk is an old wooden table top on saw horses and I just finished painting it a very soothing French blue.  Maybe tomorrow I’ll paint it a deep and regal magenta.  It all depends on what will make the Queen happy.

Do you have a special spot in or around your home where you can go to have fun and be creative?  We’d like to know.

need to kill silverfish? don’t use bug spray, use room freshener instead. kills the creepy crawlies and leaves your space smelling all apple-cinnamony…YUM!

my two copies of your book were delivered today. one copy for me (to be read after i finish “Talking to Girls About Duran Duran” by Rob Sheffield…sorry, but the XY did come first) and one for my mother for Sunday. she doesn’t like gifts from me, but this year, she’s getting two.

besides the book, i made her a new piece of jewelry, small chunks of turquoise strung & attached to a gold toggle- clasp. it’s a re-do because she didn’t like the coral i used the first time. not sure why, but it allowed me to make a 2nd necklace with turquoise & coral.

Thank you Queen Meredith for buying our book and helping me rid my world of silverfish. I’m rushing out to the store to buy some room freshener. Happy Mothers Day.

  3. Sadly live in a beige world with only a few treasured items creating color. My space is in the hallway with my desk and computer where I create my blog and read others, that is how I add color and brightness to my world ! When we owned our home paint was my friend too and I was always playing and changing to suit my mood and life at the time. Miss that, but still feel blessed I have discovered a new way to indulge.

Queen Stephanie color is as color does. I’m glad you’ve found ways to add color to your life.

  5. You always add color to my life as well , just not in the traditional way! xx
