Queen of Your Own Life

Empty Nests | Full Nests

Fall is empty nest time for many of us, whether our children are off to college or even off the Kindergarden. For many, those years of managing, serving, guiding and nurturing our offspring have defined us completely. For some, empty nest syndrome is a sense of joy and accomplishment because we’ve launched our charges into the world.  For others, it’s bittersweet as we watch them go toward a future that we know will hold struggles as well as joys.  Still for others, there is a feeling of loss, as though our purpose has been misplaced.  And then, of course, there is the very real possibility that we may feel all of the above.

What if we could turn our heads slightly and view this life transition differently? What if we could see it as an unveiling of a new painting or experience it as a hike in a beautiful, as yet undiscovered woods?  What if we could put on a t-shirt that says “My kids all left home and now I’m going to fly!”

Whether you’re newly empty nested or never had kids or still have years to go, let’s take ten minutes today to do a simple exercise.  You can write things down, if that helps, or you can simply speak them aloud.  Set a kitchen timer for ten minutes, shut yourself up in a quiet room and give yourself the gift of letting you imagination kick in.

Write down or say outloud: “If time and money were no object, today I would ______________.”  Fill in the blank.

Timers ready?  Go.

If time and money were no object, today I would fly somewhere warm and sit on the beach. I’d even wear a swimsuit and not worry about what other people think.

Hello Queens Cindy and Kathy! I’ve been a single mom for the last 17 years to the most wonderful daughter ever. I was young and in a sense, we raised each other. She just left for college 2 weeks ago which is also a 10hr drive away. I’m not handling it as well as I thought I would, trying to get into some of my own hobbies and stock the fridge with food that I like for a change. I’m so sad and cry every day, but at the same time I’m busting with pride because she is so successful, found a wonderful job with great opportunities for the future, and she’s studying hard, making friends and having fun. I actually grabbed your book to help me through this chapter of my life. Thanks so much for all of the inspiration and positive thoughts. You are two amazing women.

Kathy, you were a big part of our relationship because part of our Monday night ritual was Secret Life and we both LOVE YOU!

Time and money no object. That’s easy. Hire a nice jet and go pick up all my friends for a weekend party somewhere like Carmel. All my friends are greatly in need of a real party where all they have to do is be waited on. Now that I think of it, it would probably take most of them half the time just to get the idea that they didn’t have to do anything. So I might need some help convincing them. Would you like to join us?

  8. cindy says:

Queen Kimberly, You are a brave and wise woman. Preparing your daughter to make her way in the world is noble work. Bravo!

  9. cindy says:

Queen Sandra, You made us smile. It’s never too late to follow your dreams. Start with one step and then another. Just by expressing your wishes, you’ve already given them life. Now pick something and make it happen, then please share with us. We think you’re amazing.

  10. cindy says:

While money and time definitely play a role in what we’re able to do at any given time, Queen Barb, they can’t stop our imaginations and our dreams. Remember the piggy banks of our childhood and how much fun it was to drop a dime in and think about what all those dimes would eventually bring us? It’s no different now. Start small and save a little. Don’t let anyone tell you it can’t be done, no matter how long it takes. Make your dream come true. If not now, when?

  11. cindy says:

Queen Marly, we love the idea of a cruise around the world. It’s one of the reason’s we’re both such avid readers. We love the way books take us away to places near, far, future and past. No dream deserves to be shelved. If this is your dream, take a step toward it and don’t let anyone tell you it cannot be done.

  12. Margie says:

…ummm…ummm… I will definetely travel around the world with my black book to write everything!!!!!

  13. Christa says:

Travel and learn as much as I can 🙂
