Good Enough | Celebrating the Royal YOU

by Cindy Ratzlaff

Good Enough.  Repeat after us.  “I am doing my best, and that is good enough.”

So often we berate ourselves because we aren’t as pretty, as thin, as accomplished as someone else. We think our houses aren’t as well decorated or our food isn’t as elegantly presented. We hold ourselves to astonishing standards and allow our perceived shortcomings to make us feel “less than.”

Let’s give ourselves a BIG holiday gift and knock it off.  Let’s practice together saying, “good enough.”  I’m not suggesting we don’t try to be healthier, manage our money better, be kinder women or in general, improve ourselves along the way.  I’m suggesting we enjoy the journey more.

As we approach a new year and it is in our nature to reflect on the old one and plan for the new one, take a pledge with me and include “good enough” in your vocabulary.  I’ll start.

1. I’m hosting family for the holidays and my carpets could use a good scrubbing…but they’re good enough because my loved ones enjoy my company, not that of my carpets.

2.  I should probably bake and freeze dozens of cookies because I’ll be hosting several impromptu get together events. But I’m traveling on business and time is tight. I have a beautiful bakery near my house.  Good enough.

3.  I have three pets and I should vaccum every day or people will talk. Twice a week is good enough and they’ll talk more if I don’t invite them over for fear of cat hair.

What are your “would’ve, should’ve, could’ve’s?”  Can you get to good enough with me so we can enjoy the company, the celebrations, the joy of friends and family?

It has been a very tough year for us. We did not put up any outside lights or decorations – yes, we are the GRINCH house in the neighborhood. Still, I have an angel at my computer and an elf on the tv. Here and there are small tidbits of holiday cheer just enough to make me smile when I see them.
We won’t be having family over this year, perhaps sitting in a hospital room for the holidays.
On the bright side, no hassle about taking things down after the holiday!

Queen Laura, I don’t know the specifics of what you’re going through this holiday season, but it’s clear that you’re doing exactly what must be done to be present, and available, supportive, and in our book that shines brighter than outdoor lights. We’re thinking about you and sending you lots of good thoughts and hope you continue to find little moments in each day that make you smile. xxxooo
