Kindness | Back to Me Month

by Cindy Ratzlaff

I just finished my 2010 taxes.  I had to file an extension and take extra months to get them together for no other reason than that I am not well organized in my business finances.  This gives me a low level of anxiety all the time that is draining my energy.  So, I’m trying to teach myself to use Quickbooks because I need to banish this anxiety and get a handle on this problem.

Let me just say right up front, I’m math-phobic.  I’m not kidding.  When the teacher would say “A train leaves Chicago going 35 miles per hour and another train leaves New York going 60 miles per hour…” my brain blacked out and didn’t return until gym class.

So teaching my self to use a computer program that will eventually (or so everyone promises me) make my life simpler, causes me to cry at least once a day.

It’s important for me to remember that I’m doing something good for myself by challenging myself to learn something new because it’s easy for me to go right to a place of calling myself “stupid,” or “incompetent.”  Neither of those are true and today I’m replacing those thoughts with a wave of kindness.  I will be kind to myself today the way I would if I were my own teacher…which I am.  I will remind myself of the good thing I’m doing by learning this new skill and I will encourage myself to keep trying.

Are you kind to yourself as you try to make changes in your life, navigate learning new things, solve problems or otherwise climb that mountain of life?  Would you please share ways in which you bring kindness from you, to you?  I could use your inspiration.

I’m being kind to myself in tackling the years and years of family memorabilia contained in the family homestead my brother and I inherited. I have accepted the help of a couple of very generous friends who said they could coach me along in this difficult task.

I was tempted to run the other way. I didn’t want anyone to see what a difficult time I have letting go of these family mementos. Instead, I heard the caring voices of two wonderful friends, and I allowed myself to be vulnerable and let them help.

And Cindy, I’ve seldom met a computer “help” manual yet that did. (Help, that is). So, you’re right to replace the name-calling with kindness. You go and learn those new skills, I know you can!

Thank you Maureen. What a wonderful thing you did for yourself; gathering two very caring friends to nurture you through a difficult task. You are very wise!

Remember that Quickbooks is made for the lay person to use. Be sure to use the help button as often as necessary. I use it at work and even my boss can use it even though he still thinks in Spanish.

Thank you for the suggestion. I didn’t even notice the Help button before and I think that says a lot about me! HA.
