Queen of Your Own Life

Love | Naming and Claiming Our Royalty

by Cindy Ratzlaff

One of my favorite Broadway musicals is A Chorus Line. I must have seen it 20 times while it was on Broadway.  I was a young woman, new to New York City, ready to make my way in the world and this powerful, raw musical about young people giving their all to pursue their dream of dancing on Broadway spoke to me.

At the time, you could buy a “standing room only” ticket and stand right behind the pricey orchestra seats, leaning against the railing, through the whole show, for $5.00.  That was right in my budget range and so I stood and watched the show at least once a month for more than a year.  It was a magical show and being young in New York City was a magical time.

I find myself, this morning, humming What I Did For Love, from that show (this link is to the Glee Cast singing the song in case you don’t remember the tune.)

In order to bring more joy and less “must do” to my life, today I’m asking myself what I do for love.  I know what I do for mortgage.  I’m clear about what I do for groceries.  I’ve got all kinds of chores on my To Do list.  But what do I do for love?

Here are a few things I do for love and I’d like to add to this list so I can remind myself during moments when I feel overwhelmed and stressed.

  • What I Do For Love
  • I read books that give me joy and immerse me in a story, time or place
  • I play with my kittens, who are so full of life and energy that I laugh out loud
  • I sit on the floor with my old dog and massage his tired muscles as he moans in delight.
  • I travel with my best friend and create adventures and memories.
  • I skype with my daughter and keep up on her life and delight in her unfolding passions.
  • I sit quietly over dinner with my husband of 29 years and congratulate myself on choosing a life partner that still makes me smile.
  • I play Competitive scrabble with my sister with the energy that others reserve only for football.

When I started this list, I was feeling stressed, rushed and thought I needed to add more joy to my life.  As I finished it, I’m smiling and feeling very blessed that I’ve chosen a life filled with people, places and things I love.  Make your own list.  You’ll be glad you did.

What do you do for love?

Once again , you gals are so “on spot” for me. I’m feeling like all I do is “work” and have not time for joy and/or love in my life. You reminded me that it’s time to rebalance my days and ask myself “what do I do for love”? I’m going to start my list right now! Thank you!
