Music | The Battle for You

by Kathy Kinney

Music.  Repeat after us, “I will find a moment today to let music renew and heal me.  It doesn’t matter if it’s New Age or Classic Rock.  I will listen to the notes and feel it’s power to restore my balance.”

I was up in my attic moving some stuff around and I found an old four cd set I had bought called A Quiet Revolution: 30 years of Windham Hill.  I brought it down and  loaded it on my computer and I’m playing it now.  What a difference music can make in reversing a bad day!  I can’t say it was the worst day of my life but as we entered the 7th day of having our attic insulated,  it certainly was noisy and chaotic.  A lot like what I imagine it would be like to live under a very popular neighborhood bowling alley.

But the minute I heard the first notes of music I felt my face muscles start to relax.  Now, three songs into it, I feel positively loosey goosey.  It’s as if the music washed away the whole silly day and I am renewed.  Music is such a simple and readily available pleasure.  It is cheaper than any prescription drug and can restore me without any serious side effects.

I am committing to you that I am going to add more music to my life simply because it makes me happy.  And, that’s my job to make myself happy.  It’s no one else’s responsibility but mine.  I’m going to practice a lot so I can get really good at it because I deserve to be happy.  So sayeth the Queen.

What makes you happy?  What can change a bad day into a good one? Let’s share our stories to help one another.

Music, yes. Especially for me old music. The kind of music that takes me back in time. Hearing a ‘remember when’ song lifts my heart and changes my mood instantly.

I also love old movies – we’re talking black and white, 30’s 40’s… And when great music coincides with great images, it all comes together to provide me with a great escape. Silent movies are a particularly pleasant, almost meditative, escape. The orchestration (most often re-mastered) is so soothing. And without spoken dialog, I can just relax into the music and enjoy the images without distraction.

Anyway, those are my ideas for the perfect way to lift my mood. Oh yes… and of course a bike ride. So, start my day with a bike ride, come home and put on some music, then enjoy a silent movie before bed. It’s all good!

I love Emmylou Harris & Mark Knopfler’s “All the Roadrunning”. It has a great energy, fantastic songwriting, and a wide open quality that’s great for on the road. Also two of my favorite musicians in the world.

  9. cindy says:

That’s so funny because one of our favorite musicians is named Laura Hall!

  10. Raelene says:

The Laura Hall on Drew’s show? Very talented!
