No Judging

We don’t imagine that it’s possible or even preferable to not judge, sometimes. We judge the distance between our car and the one in front of us. We judge the safety of a given situation. We judge the trustworthiness of people we meet for the first time. Those are all good things. But we’d like you to consider the value in being, and having, judgment-free friendships. We’ve often called them “agenda-free.” Wouldn’t it be grand to have a friend to brainstorm ideas, listen to your worries, share your dreams and have them listen without any judgment or agenda except “how can I support my friend emotionally?” Can you see how that’s different than “Oh dear, if my friend loses weight, stops drinking, moves away, gets a divorce, remarries, takes up belly dancing, joins a church or any other change, how will that affect me?” That is an agenda. That is as much “judgment” as “Gee she looks fat in those pants.” We’re not saying that you should never offer your opinion if you believe your friend is heading for pain town. But pause before you speak and ask yourself “Is this about my friend or is this about my fear?”
