Overcoming Obstacles

Here’s a little secret. You’ve got what she has. You’ve got the ability to dig down and find whatever it takes to overcome obstacles. You have that because you’re human and that desire to survive is part of our DNA. Often overcoming obstacles means getting out of our own way, and by that we mean shushing the negative voices in our heads that tell us we “can’t.” Well here’s what we can’t do. We can’t please everyone. We can’t be all things to all people. We can’t go back in time and change what has already happened. Most everything else, we can do because we’re determined to survive. When we’re faced with an obstacle, first we ask ourselves “why do I want to do this?” Then we ask “how important is this in the greater picture of my life?” Then we ask ourselves “is this a nice to do or a must do?” Those kinds of questions help us determine if the obstacle is made of fear or fact. That helps us determine how we’ll tackle it. How do you handle obstacles?

The best advice I ever got was to write down the negative thought. Then ask: Does this thought add to my stress and depression (most likely, yes). Is it true? (sometimes there’s a grain of truth, but it’s usually way overblown). Is it logical? (sometimes, most often not). Then rebut the thought-in writing-with the realistic but positive opposite. I keep a notebook of my “greatest hits” so I can find rebuttals quickly.

Queen Ann, That is great advice. Thank you for sharing that tool. We suspect you’ve inspired someone today!
