Q is for Queen or Have a Little Adventure

by Kathy Kinney

I like a good adventure because it makes me feel brave and competent. I’m not talking about something huge like driving a dog sled along the Iditarod Trail. I mean something small that makes me feel stretched and takes me a little bit outside my comfort zone and is ultimately just fun.

I had an adventure like that today and now that I’m home I feel extremely proud and please with myself. I had heard about an Indie craft fair that was going to be held in a town about an hour away from where I live. I wanted to go but it seemed like it required too much effort on my part to pull it off.  Sometimes it seems so much easier to just stay home, (I call it TLF – Tired, Lazy, Fearful). I knew if I didn’t make an effort I wouldn’t go so I took action. I asked a friend if she wanted to go and we made a date. I find it’s harder to change your mind and back out if you make a date and I’m so glad I did.

We successfully negotiated the traffic, directions and found a place to park. Living in Southern California that alone is worth a medal of valor, but we also had fun chatting and catching up. When we got there we saw wondrously creative things from dairy free chocolates dipped in sea salt to dressy coats made of sweatshirt material. We met a lot of women exploring and sharing their creativity and were inspired by them.

When we were done we came pleasantly and uneventfully home. Somehow breaking the routine and having a little adventure makes everyday life so much richer. The other day I went to a movie with a friend. She has a six year old and after we sat down she admitted to me that it had been years since she had gone to movie that wasn’t meant just for children. She was positively giddy to be there and her excitement made the experience even more fun for me.

It may sound silly and small, but give yourself the gift of a little adventure. Find something you would like to do. Call a friend, make the time and do it. Life is meant to be fun and you deserve to have fun – so sayeth the Queen.

I think TLF is a good description of it. I’ve been having a series of those days lately! Today I absolutely must leave the house to go to work… Well, I’ll just be brave and think of your day out and pretend it’s an adventure! But I’ll have to schedule a real adventure soon – perhaps I should see what’s playing at our indie theater this week…
