Seeing Excuses in the Mirror | The Battle for You

by Kathy Kinney

I had my teeth cleaned and the hygienist told me that she would be sighing a lot during the appointment but I didn’t mean there was anything wrong with my teeth.  She went on to explain that she was wearing a back brace and it was giving her indigestion and that was causing the sighing.  I asked her what was wrong with her back and she told me it was probably just that her breasts were too big but also she was always sitting and leaning in goofy positions while she cleaned people’s teeth.  I asked her if she had ever thought about taking Pilates.  She stopped scraping my plaque, sat back and said, “Oh, I don’t have the time or the money right now to take Pilates.  I have four kids and I’m very busy.  Maybe later when they’re all in college I’ll have time and hopefully I won’t have done too much damage.”

I don’t know this woman, I’ve only met her one other time but I looked her in the eye and said, “You know that’s the classic excuse.  I don’t have the time or the money.”  She nodded and went back to my teeth and I kept quiet because I realized I was in a “pot calling the kettle black” kind of situation.

My goal ever day last week was simply to send an email to get the phone number of a Pilate’s instructor that had been recommended to me.  I never managed to do it.  I accomplished an incredible number of other things last week.  All of them for the betterment of the world and all of mankind but this one little thing that would make me healthier and stronger slipped through the cracks.  If I don’t put myself first who will?  I am making a commitment to you that I will not put off for another day doing something that will make me healthier and stronger…so sayeth the Queen.

Almond butter update:  The bad news is I still want to use spoonfuls of almond butter as a reward for taking my vitamins.  The good news is I have started using a smaller spoon.  Two steps forward, one step back….cha, cha, cha.
