Self-Worth | The Battle for You

by Cindy Ratzlaff

This week, as I regaled a friend with the challenges I’m having finding time to add regular, consistent exercise to my life, asked me a simple question.  “What makes you think you’re not worth the effort?”

Wow, I thought.  Is that what’s going on here?  Have I put myself so far down that proverbial “to do” list that I always bump fitness to the next day?  The answer, of course, is yes and no.  I do lots and lots of things every day that I choose to do, that I want to do.  Most of those things further my families financial well being and some of them are things that fulfill me in many ways.  But I’ve over scheduled myself.  I’ve said yes to too many things.  I have run out of time to do all the things I want to do.

I understand that this is a blessing of riches.  I’m trying to do more things in one day than I can do.  I have that option because I don’t have to spend part of my day worrying about shelter, food, safety or other basic needs.  So humbly, I admit this is a problem of degrees.  But the bottom line is, I’m having problems with boundaries.  Yes comes out of my mouth more often than “no” or even, “I’ll think about it.”

I had lunch with another friend yesterday and she echoed my time struggle.  She asked me how I do everything I do in just one day.  I told her that I fail every day because I never do everything I planned.  She shared with me that her goal for this year is to remove 20% of what she currently does every day so that she can focus on the 80% that is most important.  What a clear, simple plan, and I’m inspired.

Today, I’m going to start taking note of things that I could stop doing to give me more time to do the things that give me joy and give me health.  I’m going to keep a checklist and see if I can’t come up with a little breathing space to fit fitness into my day more often.  For example, maybe, just maybe, I could cut my Bejeweled time in half.

How are you making space for your joys in your life? I could use your advice.

Love your message! I need to fit exercise into my day and I love the comment about Bejeweled Blitz! I’m a bit addicted too! 🙂

I make space for joys in my life by trying to put those in my calendar first. I then work the rest of my day around this. If I want to have dinner with a friend or spend time quilting or gardening, I work my day around it. Taking time for joy each day is so important. I speak from experience. For way too many years I put myself and my needs dead last. I still had joy, but not to the full extent that I could have. If not now, when?

    Calendar! Good idea.

I think I use that game as a way to distract myself when I have work to do that is hard. Then, I’m scrambling. Must cut back!!
