Taking Our Mental Trash to the Curb

Queenisms are original jolts of inspiration by Kathy Kinney and Cindy Ratzlaff.

She realized she’d been her own worst critic and the things she’d been telling herself were hurtful. It was time to put her own mental trash where it belonged. ~ Queenisms™

It’s just awful when we hear someone verbally abusing someone else. We’re horrified and we have the urge to step in and protect the person on the receiving end. But what if that abuse is coming from you and being directed at you? How do you step in then? Well, we think it’s possible to reboot negative self-talk and re-frame the conversation. In fact, as much as we’ve improved the way we talk to ourselves, we still have moments when a “I’m such an idiot” phrase slips out. But the difference is that now we hear it and we reboot. We stop and say this out loud. “That is not true.I am not an idiot. I’m someone who forgot something or didn’t yet know something. That just makes me human.” When we stop and rephrase, we tell ourselves that we’re worthwhile and that we will not accept the negative messages, no matter where they come from.  Is there something you’ve been telling yourselves that needs rephrasing?

  1. Betsy Laswell says:

Yes – I “should” do this. OH darn it! another unrealistic expectation. But thanks for the reminder. I will continue to “reboot” my thinking.
