The Practice of Happiness | The Battle for You

by Cindy Ratzlaff

Habits are hard to break. I’ve been overfeeding myself for decades.  I’ve been a worrier since I was a child.  I’ve been a couch potato for years.  I’m very good at these behaviors and don’t even have to think about them to do them effectively.  Making changes feels like a massive effort, and in fact, it is.

One of the tools we recommend in Queen of Your Own Life is to practice happiness.  Find at least one thing every morning and one think every night to be thankful for and express aloud.  This simple act can be transforming.  Recently, I’ve fallen into a cycle of work, rush, worry and if I’m honest, a little bit of depression. I’ve allowed this empowering practice of happiness to fall by the wayside and I’ve unconsciously replaced it each morning with mental lists of chores, worries and a feeling of already being behind.

Today, I pledge anew to practice happiness, and I’m going to keep it simple.  This morning I’m grateful for the sounds of birds outside my window. Birds chirping is a beautiful sound to me.  They work all day to find food, care for their young, survive weather and other dangers and yet they sing.  In the practice of happiness, I don’t need to over analyze however.  I just need to notice and smile.

I’m sipping my coffee, listening and smiling and feeling thankful for the sounds of birds.

What are you thankful for today?  Let’s add our own practice of happiness lists here to help other Queens who may be having difficulty finding one thing to be happy about today.  And, in advance, I’m grateful that you took the time to read this post and to leave a comment.  Thank you.

I am happy that I have a job to come to. Even if we are experiencing a very slow time in our line of work, I am happy that we are all still able to maintain our jobs. I am happy that I have ladies in my office that help fill the day with happiness by being silly and finding the humor in things.

Queen Barbara, isn’t is wonderful how we’re able to respond with our hearts when we recognize something as being true for us? Thank you so much for sharing.
