What Are You Good At? | The Battle for You

by Kathy Kinney

One of the most fun and rewarding jobs that I have right now is that I’m Mrs. P at http://www.mrsp.com/. Along with my two partners, we’ve created a free website where children can come to discover the joy of reading, play games, have fun and learn. Beside the webisodes available on our site, I often get to go to grade schools and read to children in person.  A while ago I read to a group of first graders and when I finished I asked if there were any questions.

I always pretty much get the same questions. One little boy asked me where I lived.  “On a little island off the coast of Wisconsin.  My neighbors are the Easter Bunny, Jack Frost and Santa has a summer home there as well,” I said in my Mrs. P faux Irish lilt.  Another boy asked me if I had any pets.  “Yes, I have 412 pets and that’s not counting the two polar bears who are staying in my basement as they are just house guests,” I quickly answered.  Remember my background is in improvisation. Then a little girl asked me, “What are you good at?” For a moment I didn’t know what to say.  There were two hundred pairs of eyes looking at me and suddenly I knew what I wish I had been told at that age.  I said, Everybody is good at something.  I’m good at sitting on a chair, I’m good at reading and I’m a good friend.  Now, I want you to think about one thing you’re good at.  It can be anything, walking, sleeping or eating spaghetti and today I want you to tell a friend what that thing is.  And tonight when you go home be sure and also tell your parents what you’re good at.”

As the kids were filing out going back to their classrooms they were so full of excitement.  Usually most of them are very shy and look at their feet and mumble thank you.  This time every single one of them stopped to tell me what they were good at and give me big hugs.  The responses ranged from, “I’m good at whistling,” to “I’m good at petting my cat!” It only took that little bit of encouragement from me to fill them with pride about themselves.

I took it as a reminder to do the same for myself.  In my life I’m often quick to focus on what I can’t do and beat myself up.  It’s so easy and so much more loving to focus on what I am good at.  So for today I’m asking you, “What are good at?” Oh, and be sure and tell us because it’s so important to share it with a friend – so sayeth the Queen.

first, is it wrong for me to say that you look fetching as a redhead, Queen Kathy?

second, i’m good at WORDS: reading, writing, editing, researching, coming up with new ideas & learning. another semester with all ‘A’s…# 3 in a row! woo to the hoo!

    Queen Meredith,

I love playing a redhead but feel more comfortable as a blond. I knew a woman who used to say, “There are so few thing in life we can control, our hair color is one of them. So should we do it?”
